Frequently Asked Questions
WHY WORK WITH A DIETITIAN vs a nutritionist?
You may be wondering if there is a difference between working with a dietitian and working with a nutritionist. Dietitians are certified nutrition experts. To become a dietitian an individual must complete a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university. In addition, each dietetic student must apply and be matched to an internship program, which consists of 1200 hours of supervised practice in clinical nutrition, community nutrition, and food-service nutrition. Once the internship is complete, dietitians must pass a board certification exam to become licensed. Beginning in January 2024, a Master's degree will also be required to become a dietitian. Through this extensive education and training, dietitians are qualified to provide individualized evidence-based medical nutrition therapy and nutritional counseling. None of the above is required to be a nutritionist.
